Lotus

N. Dairinren

N. Dairinren is a large lotus with bright pink petals. Here is a description given by Garet who introduced it.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Very large lotus (150-210 cm in height)
Flowers are often larger than 30 cm in diameter.
Petal color : bright pink.
Because of the large petal size, the petals will not close into a nice bud after the first day of blooming. On the second and third day, the petals are very loose.
Very fragrant.
Very free flowering.
Receptical color : yellow, often times producing more than 30 seeds. When dry, the receptical has a habit of bending backwards.
Leaves are reddish-purple when young.
Leaf surface is smooth, and edges are wavy.
Produces a large runner rather than a starchy tuber.

History:
Hybridizer : Unknown
Found at a Buddhist temple in Kanagawa-ken, Japan.
The name of this lotus can be translated as, "Lotus as large as a wheel", or ,"Lotus of the Great Wheel" in reference to its Buddhist connection.
